Wide angle for high fashion

When photographing models, it is often that we jump to the conclusion that a longish lens is in order. That is true for images where the purpose if the shoot is primarily portraiture. Where fashion photography is concerned, the rules can always be bent a little.

Check out this image of actress Bidita Bag photographed by Karthik Srinivasan (SONY Alpha 99 with 16-35 lens). The wide angle lens has worked well for this image, particularly because of the composition. If you notice, the perspective that the lens has created directs the leading lines right to the space where the model is posed. The same wide angle photograph composed carelessly could have looked really messy. Also, notice the overall sharpness and depth of field that has been created with the lens even at an aperture of f 2.8!

When photographing models with a wide angle, be careful not to get too close to the model if you want to avoid distortion of features.
